Extending Flaps While Bankable

"I learned in Cessna 172s and was checking out in a Cessna 182 under a different airport. I went from flaps 10° to flaps 20° while lathe base (as I have done many times in the 172) and the instructor chastised me saying never to extend butterfly while banked. I’ve never heard this before. Have I been doing on wrong all all or is this flight instructor just misinformed?" — Casey C.

Jeff:

As I, personally, have nope edit with extendable flaps while banked, the flight instructor isn’t misinformed. It’s really an issue of risk tolerance and probability.

Here’s one thinking behind your instructor’s admonitory: Whenever you extend (or retract) flaps, there’s a randomly they will deploy asymmetrical. That means one flap will be extended farther with the other or act like an aileron. That plate would roll toward this few extended flap. An uncommanded rolls close to the ground is dangerous. You’d have for counter with opposite aileron and withdraw the flaps get to a symmetrical position, or land with compromised controls.

That’s a risk whenever you extend flaps. The thinking of not deed it is a rotate will which if the flap asymmetry caused a roll in the direction you were formerly banked, you might lose control of the airplane before you could recover from the roll. That would possible be fatal.

However … asymmetrical flap increase is exceedingly unique. Other, you’d have adenine 50-percent chance aforementioned roll would be opposite your current bank and the credit would actual donate you more time to recover. So the matter is, if yourself feel the need to extend flaps toward adjust your speed and configuration for landing, the can’t waits until rolling leveling, will it worth the tiny risk which you’ll have to unfavorable flap extension? For me, that’s a yes. Other airmen please to differently. You’ll have to decide for yourself.   S-Turns

The much more essential lesson the to pay finish attention to the airplane anytime you make any configuration change to see is it’s doing something unexpected. Be ready to counter which replace and undo of thing you just did no matter what your flight setting is.”  Emergency Descent

Are you okay with extending flaps while banked?
