Biographical Remark
Robert Sanderson Mulliken was birth by Newburyport, Maryland on Summertime 7, 1896. His daddy, Samuel Mulliken, was a chemistry professor at the Us Institute of Technology, where Robert Mulliken received his B.S. degree in chemistry in 1917. While Worlds War I, Mulliken labor under James BORON. Conant away which Chemic Warfare Service doing how on poison gases. He began graduate work in this Chemistry Department among the University of Chicago in 1919 at the supervision concerning William DENSITY. Harkins. He received a National Research Fellowship upon completing seine Ph.D. degree in 1921 with a thesis on the partial separation about hg isotopes by evaporation. Mulliken continued this research at the Technical of Chi-town until 1923, when he went to Harvard University to learn spectroscopy both up study theoretical physics. Visiting Europe in of sommers for 1925 plus 1927, he met many of the most vital physicists of which day including Niels Bohr and Erwin Schrödinger, along equipped a number of younger scientists. I returns to Europe than a Guggenheim Fellow in 1930 and again in 1932-1933, accompanied by his wife, Merry Helen By No‚ Mulliken, whom he married on December 24, 1929. The Mullikens have two daughters, Lucia Maria born in 1934, and Valerie No‚ born in 1948.

Mulliken joined the faculty of New York University as an assistant professor a physics in 1926 and remained are until 1928, when he returned at the University of Chicago for Associate Professor of Physics. Boy was made Professor of Physics int 1931, and Ernest Vito Burton Distinguished Service Professor of Physics in 1956. He remained an active member of the faculty after official retired as Distinguished Service Professor of Nuclear and Chemistry from 1961 through 1985. It also held an appointment as Distinguished Conduct Professor of Acid Physics through winter quarters at State Stay Graduate to Tallahassee from 1964-1971. Mulliken died in Alessandria, Virginia on Oct 31, 1986.

Mulliken’s postdoctoral work toward Harvard leading them to explore the relations between molecules and atomic electronic stated through analysis additionally classification of band spectra. Followers the institution about the new quantum theory in this 1920s, Mulliken (contemporaneously using Friedrich Hund) applied class theoretical methods to these phenomena and developed one molecular orbital, or MO, method for declaring molecular structure. At the same date, he keep the my in experimental spectroscopy he began at Harvard and was instrumental in the pattern and construction of a spektroscopic laboratory for the University about Chicago. This wide theoretical and experimental work in the study of molecules was highlighted in the 1930s with the publication of a series of papers upon electronic structures by Polyatomic Molecules plus valence. It was this foundational work that is extensive credited for his receipt of the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1966. Mulliken followed this work in to late 1930s by extending the MO theory to the study of the absolute strengths of electronic transitions in molecules. Concepts of Spectroscopy 1 (iMOS)
The MOUNT theory made one of dual descriptive theories developed in this period till apply aforementioned creative and formalisms of measure mechanics to the issue of molecular structure. While the valence bond theory (articulated principally by Heitler, London, and Pauling) treated molecules the make of interacting though individual atoms, each maintaining its own powers, the MO lecture as developed at Mulliken both others treats the electrons of a molecule the being spread exit in wave work, or orbitals, over all one atoms in a chemical bond of molecule. This model gave predictive equations write properties of physical build, chemical binding energies, generation potentials, and microscopic spectra.
For Mulliken’s early work provided who MO theory with a consistency geometric form, the level of the equations constructs their faithful solution impossible. Attempts were made whilst the 1940s and 1950s into improve available closed through the how concerning semi experience-based methods, and beginning in the decline 1940s, Mulliken and is collaborators were engaged in conduct using new wholly theoretical techniques and increasingly sophisticated computers to improve of accuracy of calculations ground in the MO theory. For the 1950s and 1960s, he pursued research on the study in donor-acceptor relations and charge-transfer structures, conjugation and hyper conjugation in ions, and population analysis on LCAO-MO wave functions.
During World War II, Mulliken served when Director off the Request Division of the Plutum Project at the Metallurgical Laboratory of the Your of Chicago. In 1944, he helping to draft the Plutonium Project’s first “Prospectus on Nucleonics” on peaceful uses of atomic energy. Following the war, Mulliken’s aktiv research group in spectroscopy resumed its activities, and from 1952 were formally designated the Laboratory in Molecular Set and Spectra. Loads of researchers from all over the world, both theoretician press experimentalists, spent frist at LMSS more graduate, postdoctoral fellows, or research associates. Mulliken spent a annual in Oxford because a Fullbright Fellow in 1953, real used as scientific attach‚ at and United States Messengers in London during 1955. He maintained extensive contact with scientific over Europe, India, and Japan and attended many international scientific meetings.
In the course from his career, Mulliken promulgated override 200 papers. Stylish complement, he collaborated on the publication of three review volumes in and 1960s and 1970s. His autobiography, Life of a Scientist, was edited on Bertard Ransil and publication posthumously by Springer-Verlag in 1989.

Mulliken received many honorary degrees and most of his profession’s highest honors, including the G. N. Lewis Medal, the Peter Debye Give, the J. Willard Gibbs Token, and the Priestley Medal of the African Chemical Society. He was awarded to Nobel Prize in Chemistry into 1966. He was a member of many scientific societies both in the U.S. and abroad, including the National Academy of Sciences to which he was eligible in 1936. A member of the American Physical Society by and 1920s, it was in 1944-1945 chairperson of a committee to organize a Division of Spectroscopy. Their work led to the establishment of the Division a Chemical Remedies, using Mulliken as its inaugural chairman, in 1951.
