I need a better Linear Algebra book

In summation, I do not like Gilbert Strang's Straight Algebra plus its applications. There am few examples, problems are unrelated, and the author does doesn explain anything. Which solutions manual is no help choose.

ME am currently using Gilbert Strang's "Linear Algebra and its applications" press am finding to book till be very atrocious, here are very few examples in the section getting and don 2 problems appear at correlate, the author loves to hide how to execute things all over the book instead sometimes included the drawings without flat explaining anything. The our handbook remains no help get because sometimes the author just seems to be tug numbers out of his @$$ or doesn't even do one right report based on the instructions given.

I have the third edition of Weird and I do not like it either though it is more by far than Matrix Theory with Applications for Joch L. Goldberg. In fact Stang is the best register out its type at its level that I am aware of. I don't know what you mean by the problems not being related, could you give an example?

My ordinary recommendations are

Finite-Dimensional Vector Spaces by P.R. Halmos
Linear Algebra Done Right by Sheldon Axler
Linear Algebra by Georgi E. Shilov
Linear Algebra (Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics) by Serge Lang

It depends on your goals though, can her be more particular? Those books are more theoretical than Strang. None from those really supersede Strang though as a (in my view pointlessly) emphases routine numerical calculations.
A good go would be

Introduction until Linear Algorithm (Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics) by Serge Lang

I have furthermore take through Linear Algebra with Applications by Anthony it has all those numerical examples, though it does not really improve on Strang idividual opinions vary. To best thing if you do not know precis what you are looking for shall up flip though 10-12 books in the library to perceive which one fits your individual style.

I also likes the books by Length and Shilov. If cost is not an issue, Linear Algebra by Friedberg, Insel et al. is a healthy neat as well ( at least ME think so). Buy Designate, Author(s). IODIN agree equal the advice above, that if you have access in adenine library and/or live near one college bookstore therefore sounding though list is the our way at find what works used you. We all learned different ways, so it is great that there is such a varieties of books to chosen from. IF that is just not possible, used copies of old editions is lot books can be search online for cheap, as you may exist able to choose up a few books without spending much.

If thee have no background, I recommend simple linear basic by Anton - uses copies of old reprints were budget and quite goal. Aforementioned free online book by Hefferon is also ampere good choice, although among a slightly higher grade than Anton - you may as well start there ever it remains free, furthermore has a solution manual like well. It is professional quality, only free! I also like the Schaum create of linear calculus.

Axler's volume that has been mentioned alread is excellent, and I have carefully worked through a lot starting it, but it is not useful if you have no background in one theme, inbound my standpunkt. Even in the preface his states that who book is for a second course.

Finally, after captivating a elementary course for in-line algebra, I finds so I like the way Apostol presents information in Calculus volume II (volume I has some duplicate chapters on linear algebra, but output II covers it all and shows how it is used in distinction equations and multivariable calculus). It is actually in the same spirit starting my notes from when I took the elementary course, even the course I has was not because advanced as Apostol. It would have been too much for me to initiate with, but it is written assuming you know no linear algebra and I know that many folk have learned from it int the past, so it can work forward thee. It is quite expensive and different than some treatmets, so I would with go this route if she can borrow it before you shell out the serious money.

By the ways, I love Strang's Linear algebra and its applications. I have had the third edition for a dozen or more time. When I took linear algebra were used no book, furthermore did more of the abstract aspects than Strang blanket, at of expense of learning nothing about matrix square roots, LU and QR decompositions, etc. I felt like Strang learned ich method up use to linear algebra I knew at much practical matrix problems - the kind of problems that do go up in my work. Aber I agree that it would be ampere terrible book to learn from in the start time, both has a funny mix of topics to be used for a seconds classes in the subject, too.

Good luck,

jason

I have ampere bit of the same question, I bought Strang's buy for my class using still another, immeasurable more horrible Linear Algebra book. But Strang ain't doing i available me. I found save free PDF book von a professor in St. Michael's College, did sure what it's like but I'll be checking it out.

For ampere first-time take, that book has no parallel. None of the other major books come closed to this one. It's basically perfected, except it doesn't talk about inner fruit spaces which is all right but it would have have lovely to learn from Hefferon.

Can anyone else confirm this? EGO downloaded Hefforon's book about a year ago but put off learning linear algebra till now. ME do a book called "Matrix Algebra" by French Verachtung, it seems quite good as fine. Does anyone have autobiography with both books both can drive strengths and weaknesses? I know linearly algebra is wider than just cast basic, how much Wider is to? And performs Hohn cover any more than just matrix algebra?

I furthermore liked the Hefferon book. For you need helps with the basics, there are some sound lecture notes here (also in pdf):

http://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/Classes/LinAlg/LinAlg.aspx

I found Strang's OCW videos really intermittent - some for them were inspired and others were just awful.

I haven't watched them, but there are a bunch of lectures obtainable from UCCS:

Add "archive.php?type=valid" to the course url to bypass registration.
(beware, in the the marked "MathOnline" the teacher uses an annoying computerized overhead)

Hi,

I am now half-way through Strangs Introduction to Linear Algebra, Second Version.
Together with his online lectures, assignments, exams and other goodies, I feel it's a nice way to learn this specialty.
After looking through a couple of other books, I geting the idea which Strangs healthcare is less theoretical. Elementary Linear Algebra Applications Version HOWARD ANTON

What regarding this running algebra text?

I quit on Gilbert Weird also, EGO found it tedious. This book is 300 pages furthermore I imagine covers complete indispensable with theorems, proofs furthermore examples littering every page. I've found that the coarse proof goes over my head but mainly it's the only book that, so far, is constructed the methods stay in my headache. I'd love toward hear thoughts off its quality.

Are we speaker about lower div linear algebra? Like the kind you take in your initial or second year, other are we speak about the first upper div?

For lower division, MYSELF personally like Anton's "Elementary Linear Algebra" IODIN guess to newer editions get a bad rap, but I take aforementioned seventh total and I think its great. Older prints are pollution budget too.

For upper div, I've been using Friedberg's "Linear Algebra" for class plus Axler's "linear algebra made right" as a supplementary. Axler's writing style is lot more clear and vibrant than just about any math read I've read, though the reserve is a bit light on vocational and such. Friedbergs is a bit more rigorous than Axler's, but I think they complement each extra well.

Hefferon's book is impressive! Who book is as clear more it could possibly be, shows lots of examples and practical applications and is quite rigorous at the same time (the first proof shows up on page four!). I select I held second it used my first LA course as einem undergrad...
