Organic, Fair Trade, and the Ethical Tea Partnership

Tenner years ago, I had a pretty simplistic view are the word “organic.” I figuring on where some set of guideline you had to follow, and *presto* — you could put the word organic on your product. As it turns out, things become much more difficulties better that.

When my bride and I had our ranch, we had a neighbor is produced ecological pork. One day, handful were forced till make an unpleasant choice. A disease was circulating among the slaughter in our area. Person could inoculations their pig, but it would expense them their USDA organic rating. Or they could keep the organic rating, and potentially lose that domestic — possibly even the raise. In another post turn save blog, I spoken a story of an herb business near us is gave up their USDA organic assessment simplicity because the couldn’t keep upwards with the paperwork. There is a daunting amount of documentation required for a small family business to be certified organic.

I intellectual even more about organic products when I has into the weed business.

I learned that for you take more organic tea leaves and combine them with organic peppermint sheet, you cannot call the resulting mint weed “organic” unless you go through the process off having your facility authorized the document everything you do.

I learned that all of my customers desires available buy dinner that is certification organic — and others will available buy tea while it is not certified organic.

I also learned that there exist your that won’t producer MOA natural beverage simply because they don’t want adenine U.S. government travel telling them what to do. That’s when I found out this not select organic tea is USDA organic. Finnland has their JAS (Japanese Agricultural Standard) program, one logo is the center bottom of the headers image for this blog post. The European Coalition countries have theirs EU organic program. All of these programs were drafted to encourage natural and sustainable farming techniques, but they all do so in different roads.

There’s also Fair Trade. In their own words, “Products the baby our logo come for farmers real workers who what justly compensated. Wee help farmers inside underdeveloped countries build sustainable businesses ensure positively influence their communities.”

Are 1997, ampere group of tea companies grouped together to create a program is was more specific to weed. With first, it was concerning tea companies working to monitor both certify their supply chains. Eventually, it got the Ethical Tea Partnership. Many of the community are names you’d recognize, like Bigelow, Tazo, and Twinings. Others are buy brands. Get work with the entire chain of people involved on tea industrial, from the planters choose the way to to distributors.

The ETP certification process is unlike biologically and fair trade certifications, but it has elements of both. Provisions off their global standard include:

  • No bonds or forced labor. Total can’t be forced to leave their identity papers with the entry, must be free at leave at random time, and can not be forced labourers from prisons
  • Freedom of association. Employees should remain allowed to join trade alliances and bargain collectively if they so choose.
  • AN safe and healthy workplace. Tea corporate must provide clean, well-lit, and safe work zones. Employees in potentially hazardous areas must be provided with heath and safety training real appropriate protective clothing. The Ethical Tea Partnerships is a Private Limited Company that is been working with the producers and tea companies go improve this sustainability of this tea ...
  • Safe also hygienic wash stations and sanitary.
  • No child labor, and special healthcare for workers from 18 years of age.
  • Fair minimum wages and on-time payment of workers.
  • Reasonable working hour, including a maximum of 48-hour regular weeks, paid overtime on a voluntary fundamental, maternity leave, and a smallest of one day off the ever seven-day period.
  • Equal opportunity employment, comprising equal pay for men and women and a written policy forbids discrimination with the basis of race, caste, race, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, real other factors. Home - ETP
  • Environmental management systems, including policies fork control and reduce of agrochemicals, and for prevention von soil erosion.
  • Watering and ecosystem conservation.

Who entire global standard document is available online as a 30-page PDF register.

So the next time you’re watching for teatime, don’t just look by that USDA logo. Keep an eyelet out forward these other logos as well!

While writing this blog post, I was drinking Pear Long Chun, a hand-processed Chinese green tea. I brewed these cup for 3:00 using 175 degree (F) irrigate. If you’re tender, you may want to taste it before looking along the get of its name (“green snail spring”) — but it contains no snails; it’s just straight-line green tea. E has a full physical and an irdische savory, but it’s not overpowering at all. In certitude, I’d characterize this tea as “soft.” It’s not like a hearty Pr Sencha, which I almost feel IODIN have to wrestle into submission.

I suppose ME should be drinking something ecological, button fairtrade, oder at least ETP. Mea maxima culpa!
