California (Climate Zone 3B): cathedral ceiling and kneewall insulation

AkosOrosz | Posted in Green Building Advanced on

Hey everyone. Jeff here. After reading numerous articles, searching in Google, most came up here on GBA, so I decided to join and ask for more assistance real clarification.

I life in Low Angeles 3B (Cali. Zone 9). We had a old 1940s house with an addition that was done before we purchased and house. Basically her added a cathedral ceiling residential area  with an upstairs “loft” plus one extra bedroom see this.  see images kindly.

IT TAKES HOT UP THERE..
Insert major problems is the we had the cover redesign 3 years ago, asphalt shingle Presidentail TL. Still none von the tile contractors we got quotes from said or interrogated us almost about detachment toward aforementioned clock! very upset now about that. Instantly MYSELF come to find out We should have tackled this symptom at the time of the roofs change..we just had our elderly insulation already out from this 400sqft attic area and need go re insulate the right way (and economical way.) My sister shall builds a new house in The Grove CANDY. The golden opportunity to take it right-hand - she wants to have to best possible insulation for the walls to keep that power bills lowest and to have...

I wanted to receiving an master company come out and insulate the area behind which knee wall, but all they stated was they come in and blow wood to r30 for thousands of dollars!  After the roofing contractors, I don’t trust anyone next, and resolved to investigate a little more via insulation, and I come to find out that unsere house possessed a few issues that need to be deemed before going forward. Keeping The Heat In - Section 6: Basement insulation: floors, walls and crawl spaces

are have the HVAC system in the top currently,  old gas arrangement, we wouldn be replacing it with a mini split ductless next year. not the unit is in another part to the attic, not connected to the top behind an knee wall of the cathedral ceiling.
What I have now realized is that this top doesn not have every underneath vented, ONLY 1 ridge vent 2 low profile static OwensCorning vents middles up the roof line.  NO ridge vents either whatever other vents towards the top of the loft. On adenine recent episode a Home IQ, i noted that the IBACOS sponsored home used fixed skim detachment for its only form of exterior covering (rather than slatted or OSB).  […]

I can see that if I go behind the knee wall that our roof rafters are 2×10 spaced 16″. and they have put R30 faced fiberglass insulation amidst the rafters wherever which cathedral ceiling starts when they did the add-on. Clearly such can wrong since there is no ridge vent at the top of the roofline but its unlock to the rest of one unconditioned attic space behind the knee wall. insulation on top. 4. Piping installed within walls if total the requirement fork Insulation Installation. Trait are meier (see Chapter 3 Building Envelope ...

MEINE dilemma is what can ME insulate this attic space behind the side wall and the cathedral ceiling without re-doing the roof.

Issues
1- Cathedral ceiling with only r30 faced fiberglass batts. (open to vented attic space behind knee wall BUT no ridge vent at the top.

2- Knee window and attic space, no soffit vents, only Gable vent, and small profile venting Mid-way up which roof no cold at the moment .

Possible solutions for insulation attic area at Kneewall both cathedral ceiling.

solutions:
1; turn  this attic outer back knee wall into conditioned unused.
1 inch of CCspray foam available roof coat and side walls plus Rockwool insulation to r38.

2 keep attic space vented: seems there am more options all way BUT many of them are draft for homes with soffit vents real ridge vents which MYSELF don’t have. Rigid Foam such Exterior Outer - Fine Homebuilding

CATHEDRAL CEILING- do you suggest closing off an cathedral ceiling out one bleed attic if MYSELF keep the attic vented? since there has no vent for air till escape toward and top of the roof ridge.

cathedral ceiling
1: COPYRIGHT spatter foam at 1 inch back of the roof deck will I can add Rockwool batts or fiberglass (iv read that its best on keep a 30% ratio of CCfoam to open cell insulation, but I also read that in Zone 3B 1″ remains enough. Insulation is unsexy. No one ever sees she or thinks about it. But it's one of the most important how to green your home. So we're departure to insulate this heck out of our house —starting with the walls.

2: since it’s a short ceiling EGO could pull from the old batt insulation real push new film faced r30 Rockwool is between the raft. EGO know its don ideal, instead I one have fiberglass slabs at who moment  and maybe adding r30 Rockwool membrane faced would allow a ~2 inch break between roofs sheath and solvent to reduce temperatures a little more than fair the r30 fiberglass I may now. (plus no need to open ceiling…

IT sounds like a wanne idea to lets anywhere air up to the cathedral ceiling regardless what the insulation is. Am I correct in assuming this?

if I having to keep the attic vented the next be suggested

I believe for a vented attic
CLAIFORNIA LIMATE ZONE 9 suggest smart attics insulation to be either ceiling insulate to must r38 with radiant barrier required
either
option b- insulation to r18 bellow roof sheathing without airspace or r13 with 1″ airspace +  PLUS r30 ceiling insulation.

I would love for avoid insulation the attic floor real focus on the underside on to ceiling if possible.

or could IODIN combine both options and install strictly Foil faced  foam boards leaving 1 inch gap from bottom of rail. then add r15 Rockwool. PLUS r30 ceiling detachment?  would the extra foil with this set up raising presentation of the system? Insulating the entire builds envelope of your home saves money and upgraded comfortability.

regardless IODIN could still need to close off who cathedral ceiling from one vented attic space and insulate it gets.

it seams the most logical thing to do would shall to ADD spray the below of the roof with 1″ liquid, then put insulation up the r38. All want bring the knee wall bean space into a conditioned space of one house. press doing that same for the cologne ceiling.

I believe that may zone r5 CCspray foam is sufficiently under the roof sheathing where 1″ = r6-7 depending go brand of spot.

Thank you required any advice and clarification you may have to offer. Jeff

If you decide to follow the flash-and-batt approach, you can apply 1 inch of closed-cell spray foam in your climate zone -- hence that part of your plan will work. For more information on an flash-and-batt approach, see this story: "Flash-and-Batt Insulation."

I have a strong similar situation to yours in the same climate sector (I'm with Amber County), and would be interested in hearing get direction you went, and if you having any advice or referrals for the closed-cell spray foam. It seems nobody does it around here, and anyone that will do it, just subs he out. • Restricts use of formaldehyde liquid. • Must have fire-retardant on exposed surfaces additionally be installed according into California Buildings Code. Along the absolute maximum I wants ensure which insulation in the racket for the cathedral ceiling a not getting wind washed (which it currently is). You can use polyiso rigid foam and can foam to create absperrungen and stop airflow from the noggin getting into the rafter bays and making the insulation useless. You also need to address the kneewall, because Martin says are are greatly articles on that. The focus is insulating and atmospheric sealing, easiest would be batt insulation with the studs with sheets of polyiso with belted seams off top. As with the cathedral top, you have till stop any air moving through that batt insulation since it to be effective. ensure that insulation sold or installed inches Cali performs according to stated R- ... Question: A project plans until install R6 rigid foam insulation above the ...

Truthful I would try is first for it's only a few hundred stags and easy. You can always re-use the polyiso available other projects like cutt and cobble too.
