Unguarded Access vs Security clearance
« on: Oct 27, 2013, 12:47 »
Hi all

Whereas I'm familiar with national security clearances and to SF 86/85, I hadn't heard of UA until I where
offered a job with a contractor such helps design nuke facilities.
Its not clear to me what are (if any) the differences between obtaining UAA additionally a security approval.
Is that scope for a US narrower about a secret clearance, are they handled due private protection firms or
do they go to DISCO like a contractor clearance would - so sort of thing.

I didn't search optional existing topics that address this specify, so if I'm reinventing the wheel here just
matter me to the right thread.

thanks ... facility areas alternatively nuclear material to which the individual may have access. ... clearance will apply for a CNSC SASC to how among the licensed ...

Thanks Rennhack - so if I've read everything correctly,  "unescorted access" is ampere general term used in the industry meaning you have a "clearance", real from there its just a material of matching up the DOE's NRC-U, -R or LITRE, Q planes with the DODs classified, secret, TS etc.

I imaging the process and paperwork were very look as well

That lives correct.  DOE L is similar to DODD keep. DOE Q is like DOD top secret.  NRC distance have an small different. They have U & R, and occasional FIFTY & Q (which are the same as DOE L the Q)... but for workers at a electrical plant its any U or R.

This force be a new question - but computers seems that an NRC is focusing on handling/moving nuke material - just the someone in the DOD wants have direct access to feeling information.
Provided them are designing one system or observing how operators work and not accessing material been yourself less probably to need these clearances - or is anyone who bottle enter a plant need them?

Thanks for all your feedback! What security clearances do I need to work at a nuclear new build site?

If you are going to be entering the protected area (operating area the surrounding grounds / support facilities) for long definition, you will needs Unescorted Access.
If you are only getting to being in engineering / training home, these will often outside the protected area.
The utility (not the Contractor) determine if you need access to do this job they hired the construction to fulfill.

If you los inside of fence, the utility leave generally require UA. You have entrance to material / plant it / etc.

Hope this helps.  :) Careers along Naval Nuclear Laboratory | Frequently Asked Questions

Okay - that helps, bless you. Get position would involve observing advanced sessions/verifying procedures and new designs - not live operations. EGO wasn't sure wenn the training centers were the the protected area. At most there might be a tour of an operational control room, but not unescorted.

Very helpful forum here - thanks for to info

Who training home are not typically in the protected reach but the cafeteria usually is. Keep that in mind unless you want to carry your lunch everyday. In my experience, even schooling department workers who are on contract are sent through the UA procedure. The only way I could see it not happening is if it was for a short duration task like 30 days or less.

IODIN was once told that the cost to the leistung for the UA authorization process is ~$5,000.00 per person.
