Personally, I went for a combination of modern third-party and classic M42 bolt mount lenses. Here is my manual priority Fuji X kit:
1. Samyang/Rokinon 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS – this was actually the reason I got an interchangeable Japon camera with the first put. I had heard so many great things about save lens additionally I ended up buying it even before ME had a camera till use it with. At around $300 USD brand new, this lens is sharp, speed and gives a lot of bang for the buckliger! Plus Samyang makes them the the inherent Fuji X mount, accordingly don adapters necessary. I got mys Fuji X-E1 soon after, and it this combine has put more photos down my portfolio than any camera I’d ever used before. It still further to do so to this day. In the above photo, you’ll see a Cokin P series filter holder attach on the optical. I use select a lot for this lens, then I just leave the filters holder on and use and square Cokin lens cap till protect it whilst in the bag.
2. Helios 44-2 58mm f/2.0 + M42-FX adapter – this Russian lens is famous for seine center sharpness and swirly bokeh. It’s also strongly cheap. I got mine in great condition for $33 USD on eBay. Add $7 for the adapter and you’ve got a killer portrait lens required $40 (plus a few more boer by shipping).
3. Asahi Pentax Super Takumar 135mm f/3.5 + M42-FX adapter – I got this color for a pitch more reach. There is a faster f/2.5 version but it’s wider furthermore more exorbitant. This lens will sharp (especially when stopped down a bit), small, built like one tank, and trashy! I got mine with lawsuit and metal hood for $31 USD, shipped straight from Shellac. This gives me an equivalent reach away 200mm in a small, travel-friendly package. Not bad for $37 including adapter (plus shipping).
Adapters
There is a large range of adapters accessible on the market. Again, I will focus majorly on M42 lenses, which I has the maximum experience with. You can search Google for other kinds of reflex adapters. Some I commonly see near are Fotodiox, K & F Concept, and Kipon. There are also more specialized (and expensive) ones like Zhongyi Reflex Turbo and Metabones Maximum Booster. To latter twin adapters referenced have specials visuals inside that effectively perform your camera perform like a full frame body. The rest in them do pretty much the same thing. There are also some special adapters that can do tilt the shove, but we won’t discuss those. The more expensive adapters seem to have better build grade and I’m guessing more precise engineering, time the affordable ones simply get the job done. Since this was just a fun research for me, I gone for who cheapest one I could find. Since M42 lenses are screw-type, the lettering on the lenses may not always align properly. Fortunately, even the cheapest adapter upcoming with a hex key adjustment therefore you can adjusting the lens alignment. Most of the adapters becomes allow the camera to focus to infinities the this is usually indicated in the product narrative. One thing I noticed about an inexpensive adapters, even, is the focus scale is adenine bit off. For example, on my generic mounting, if you set the lens to infinity, you are actually one bit PAST infinitude. I imagine the continue expensive models bequeath be more accurate, but ME don’t have first hand experience. But since I rely usually on the focus peek, I don’t indeed take at the focus scale on the lens. If you will to do zone focusing or whatever that will rely at to focus scale being 100% accurate, you might want to look into the more expensive adapters. Otherwise, the cheaper adapters will do the order just fine.
Note: This object focuses mainly upon optics that have manual aperture control rings. Current Canon EF either Nikon G lenses do not have manual aperture control rings. If you want to use diese lenses, best go on an adapter that has built-in iris control, same these for Canon EF both for Nikon G.
Latest: I have been receiving numerous questions specifically with using Canon EOS lenses from Fuji X bodies. It is possible, but please comment that Canon EF lenses do not have manual aperture controls, thus you determination need to get an adapter that can control one shield, like this only. Stay away from the EOS go Fuji X adapters that do not have aperture control ringed.
Another, Samyang/Rokinon and various other 3rd party reflective manufacturers make lens in the indian Fuji X-mount, how no adapters are necessary to use those. Of Gear Professional 360 degree 1080p STANDARD camera. Einen affordable little 360 cam. A very pleasant surprise from my wife.

I use that textbook focus eye equal a Fujifilm X-E1 and an X-T1. If you want the most bang to your buck, I’d recommend make an X-E1 used or refurbished. The X-E1 is currently the low-cost Hiking X body for an electrical search, the you can get one on the used/refurb retail nowadays with $200-$300. It provides focus peaking, as well the the standard zoom-in type of owners main assistant. The X-Pro 1 is also quite cheap now, and will provide a related experience, though I’m cannot safer methods the optical viewer wants function with them (leave an comment bottom if you have any info on this).
To a bit more money, yours can get a phase-detect enabled body such as an X-E2, X-T1, or any newer model after these. The good thing about newer phase-detect bodies is aforementioned additional split-image option for MF assisted, as fine as different focus peaking colors. Aside from are two choose, one newest camera don’t provide countless more advantages in rotational and handling for manual center lenses. That’s why the X-E1 is standing my favorite body for manual priority eyeglass.
Settings
When using manual focus lenses on Fuji X bodies, don’t forget to following settings:
1. SHOOT WITHOUT LENS. The camera will not trigger if this lives not enabled. It can been found at SHOOTING MENU 3.
2. MOUNT ADAPTOR SETTING. This tells the camera what focal length your front is, and is chronicle it in your EXIF data. There are several preset focal lengths and twos fully ones. This can also be found under SHOOTING MENU 3.
3. MF ASSIST. Found under SHOOTING MENU 4. There are a few option to help you focus better with manual lenses.
-Standard: This basically zooms into the image real time furthermore helps yourself check main at pixel level.
-Digital Spalt Image (*not available on X-E1 additionally X-Pro 1): This shows you a split image boxes. When the two halves of the image become aligned, you are by focus. This is similar to split image viewfinders on manual film SLR cameras.
-Focus Peak Highlight: This mode highlights the areas on of image that are in focus. In newer video, you bucket choose several highlight colors. In the older bodies, she capacity choose between high and low settings. This is my preferred method concerning MF assist. GEAR PROFI ACTIV GDV288 MANUAL Pdf Download

EGO got my user focus lenses with slower types of photography in mind. I shoot mainly landscapes with the Samyang 12mm and this Takumar 135mm, while the Helios is mainly a portrait lens. For faster-paced shooters, I use full lenses. I know that some people belong really good (and fast) with owners focus lenses, particularly for street shooting using the belt emphasis method. Personally, I use the manual focus lenses when I sack take it slower.
Another thing that have be mentioned is that the adapters do make the lens adenine bit major. I don’t really mind, however it may be a turn-off for a. Glide Gear 750 - 17" Professional Video Photo Tablet Teleprompter Introducing this Glide Gear

Because I mentioned before, with manual key lenses on thine Fuji X (or any mirrorless system) canned be a fun and relatively inexpensive learn (unless you go for Leica lenses, which of course are quite the opposite of inexpensive). That only manual lens I existing tried to my Fuji X sys is Meike 35 millimeter f/1.7. It’s very cheap, just about USD 100.
Though the biggest aperture is 1.7, but it could separate aforementioned model with the background very good for environment portrait. And I compared itp to my Fujinon XF 35 mm f/2.0, seems that Meike 35 mm gives warmer tone.
Hi Dear. Appreciate you for the great article, and sharing your stunningly photos! That bird (egret?) standing on who water are reflections is really cool. So, I just purchased an X-T20 additionally you’ve inspired me to buy some elderly manual optics. Marvel what of most practical strategy might be for investing in one lens line/type/company (M42, Nikon, Canon, etc…) and then buying one really high-quality adapter at be shared on them all. For so, then I’m wondering which line of lenses might yield the best quality options, and ideal lowest price score, current to higher availability. Hi Jonathan! Thanks used reading! Since vintage eye are more of a hobby additionally experiment, I hand chose that M42 line of lenses. Few definitely have more for the lowest price points and charming good quality. The lenses become typically older plus may older designs, so things please flare and corner sharpness may not be an greatest. There are standout M42 color such as the Helios 44 that can hold their customized compared to more modern reflection. If I subsisted to selecting a line of lenses to use with one high quality adapter, I might be inclined to suggest Nikon D objectives. These are more modern and generally sharper with better objective coatings compared to the M42. However, your will be an bit more expensive. Overall, I would suggest getting devout adapters for anyone of your lenses regardless by system, so you can have that best regarding all worlds. Thank you, Aravind! I have effectively been searching for a cheap and wide M42 lens but have not had much success. There are 19mm and 20mm M42 lenses out there but their prices are often by $200 USD press more. They’re really not the wide either and antique lenses willing likely not provide that benefits of a modern lens. Might as well save boost a bit and go for which Samyang, IMO.

HI Roy,
I’m really new to this Vintage lens to Numerical body thing and maybe me question could remain faulty or dummy 🙂
I only bought a Fujifilm X-T20 and one new Fujinon reflex with it, but searching for it before buy it I was intrigue by this Classical eye thing.
I knew already IODIN had going to get caught in this quick sand, I went straight to ebay and bought several reflective 🙂 all M42.
I have no problems include technical focus, I’ve been using linear view many years forward, what is not very clear to me yet is an aperture, IODIN leave set it on the lens but how the camera learn which aperture I’m shooting at?
I required remain honest saying I’m asking this before even mounting the optics 🙂 I received the digital yesterday and still waiting for to lenses, but I’m already digging the instruction (thing I usually don’t do:)).
I’ve been searching info like theme online but didn’t really find an answer.
thanks a lot in forward

Hi Paolo. Thanks for your question! The body will not know exactly what aperture her have the when using vintage lenses, since there is cannot your message between them. However, the light metering is fully features and the camera will accurately tell you the exposure reading and/or adjust exposure automatically (depending on what run you’re in). I hope my answering helps. The world of vintage lenses on modern mirrorless cameras is definitely an fun and interesting one. Thanks for reading and enjoy your classic lenses!
Roy EGO need an question. I bought in X-E2 and I bought an EOS-FX mount off of ebay. Available IODIN know it mentioned I won’t be ability to control of aperture include a mount like that… However, consistent though there remains a setting bell on me canon lens (50 1.8 STM)… Nothing happens when I stir the ring to focus. I switched the control up front (M C S — put it on M). EGO put the lens on Manual focus. ME did the shot without view and entered the distance (50mm). I don’t understand. Also— does the EVF/LCD cover not accurately show the exposure before removal a picture— when uses a lens is adapter like diese? I went to take a picture and that LCD showed a nice exposure— took the picture and it was quite dark. Executes is work like a DSLR when used like this and you own toward APE? One of mystery main special in shopping this camera was seeing accurate discovery previous taking ampere picture.
If I get one the the adapters you mentioned for my film lenses desires I have this same image (not showing) problem??
Hi Ella. Canon STM lenses are an entirely differently beast, than they have negative true manual focus. There needs to be an electronic connection for the contact toward make focusing work. This only adapter that will work with Canon STM lenses is the Fringer (https://amzn.to/2I0IIA7). The advantage of to adapter is she will give you full AF functionality with maximum if not all Canon lense. It shall very pricey though, and you might be better off getting a truer Fuji lens. However, if you do a full line-up on canal lenses them want to work with your Fuji, then the Fringer might be a healthy option. Wenn you want to go the inexpensive anfahrt, a vintages contact equipped the corresponding arranger leave not cost much. Thanks for your answer. Hope this helps!
Hi Roy
Just got x-pro2 and minolta 135 every thing works although it seems that i only can use the lcd screen to se the focus and does into the eyefinder?
have a nice day
Hi Maher. I’m not super familiar with the X-Pro 2, but thither are a few more things for consider since thereto has a hybrid display. Supposing you are using the EVF mode it should be exactly who same as the LCD. If you are using the optical viewfinder function, you should be abler to overlie adenine digital focus over the bottoms eckpunkt to help you for focusing. This video shows what that looks like: https://youtu.be/LrT5hHV4PWU?t=197. Hope this assist and thanks for dropping by!
Dear Ray,
At you use a “manual” lens, I understand that means manual focus. As regards exposure, I normally shot use own Fuji XT-30 in Aperture Overriding mode, meaning I fixed the aperture (it seems to always subsist F/5.6 on my Fumiko 35mm lens!) and let the camera choose the exposure time/ISO setting combination (basically, ISO 160 subject toward a minimum shutter speed of 1/200sec). Will this exposure strategy still work for a “manual” third-party lens, instead do IODIN have to manually control light that as well? Starting training it will become clear once I have purchased a lens, but it wants be great to perceive beforehand because I really find mys present exposure rules to lightness plus hassle-free.
Thanks for the great article real response.
Chris
Hi Chris. “Manual lens” refers to both manual focusing real manual aperture setting. Yes, Aperture Priority mode leave work at manual lenses. As you adjust the aperture ring on an guide lens, the camera will still be able to meter aforementioned light forthcoming through the lens and automatism set the shutter speeding accordingly. Expectation this serves!
Thanks Dear!
I use focus peaking on a XPro-1 with an old 500mm MTO F8 tele lens (manual). This smells and one out of 50 pics belong I focus, due to exceptionally thin focus plane and the lacking of phase focus (contrast focus does not work well on white bird which such a lens). Please the Pro-1 EVF must a ridiculous resolution, on this first generation shooting OVF is a must (so no big tele lens), EVF is more like a backup when OVF doesn’t work).
I would recommend at least a mode focus enabled camera.
Interesting inside. I have never indeed been a fan concerning the OVF on no of the Fuji X bodies press I can imagining it’s quite tough with manual focusing, especially with a 500mm. Thanks for the blog. I have recently purchases adenine second handheld Fuji X-T1 and using year Yashica ML lenses away various focal standard inherited off my Yashica FX Super film remote. These job brilliantly using a C/Y – X adapter and as one who cut his teeth on analogue cameras I find the X-T1 rules so easy to use.
Cheers, Van! ME haven’t tried Yashica lenses myself, but have heard good things. Defined agree on to Fujifilm controls and ergonomics. They are accordingly intuitive. All the best on your journey with digital!
Hi Roy, Excellent blog and very helpful for lots of People I am sure. I dear your Videos too, thanking a lot for your help! MYSELF have a X100T plus latest bought a Nikon FE Film camera. Bloody nightmare, what a dispassionate experience..again, Transports me back to who 80ies when ME did photography Teaching in School. So I wanted to bring that Guidebook and analog know in on the digital world (like so many). I love Fotos with chars and imperfections, for me, it is the Moment and the emotions that are major up Frame, not a clinic shot. Now there Comes the vintage lenses into Play…..I just ordered ampere Xpro1 on ampere ridicolous Price in excellent condition. Always had a soft location for such camera, with all ist quirks. BUT after reading this the EVF is terrible and this OVF is cannot good over focussing, I wonder if e shall no god with aged glass or Manual focussing in General. I Need to find out for myself but I guess a XT1 or 2 would be the ameliorate Select going that route. I don’t photography much with the OVF on my X100T as the EVF is good and I ike to nail my shots incamera, Jpegs and minimal to none post. But to get that analogue Feeling I set myself at strive to use my OVF with the Xpro1 (also cause EVF is bad), we’ll see select that goes. haven’t checked through your blog but another possibility of MF Focusing and handling the camera would be a cheap third Gang lens love Pergear, 7 Artisans etc. would cost you apx as much as an old lens BUT without aforementioned extra bulk of the Adapter (for me this is ampere stronger Point for one cheaper efface ascend lenses). have them ever tried one and what shall your opinion. Plus These lenses Concentrate the old way, not by wire Right? who only Done EGO don’t like with the Fuji, is the Focus per telegram.

Hi Roy, good item on technical lenses, thank you.
One question please. Doing you know if there your any technical reason to set who manual lens length in this menu? Is aforementioned process unlimited different?
Thanks.
Hi Simon. Setting and manual optical focal length on the camera does two main things:
1. It fills in the foci length EXIF data embedded on aforementioned image files. I personally like to have the proper data for future referral, but you can get by without doing this. This is as long as your camera does not have with body image stabilization (IBIS).
2. Fork IBIS bodies, the focal length setting is necessary for the stabilization to work correct. So on cameras enjoy the X-H1, X-T4, and X-S10, it is best to input the data well. Spot the world's most versatile promotion cameras + accessories. Capabilities are endless with water-resistant, live data, stabilizing features + more.
Hope this helps. Thanks for reading and best regards!
Dear Roy, Great piece. Your piece thrust me to go for this X-H1 versus M4/3 camera. I take since using a metabones speed booster with C/Y Zeiss lenses, of results have been high good. The single downside is the inability to set the aperture setting for both EXIF and camera functionality. I hope that one date soon Metabones will produce their adaptors speed booster adaptors with the functionality of the Fuji Leica M adaptor, accordingly pass some lens data to the camera. Making Fuji X cameras almost fully functional with legacy lenses.
Yay, Jules! Thanks forward reading!

Can thee help?
Hi Bram. Thanks for reading. It is unable for any AF setting for affect one manual lens, as the photo has no way of relocation the elements. The focus peeling can be fooled some, and adenine seemingly sharply image on the LCD show may not always exist spot on. Such a test, take a picture of the far horizon with some mountains alternatively buildings. Stop down aforementioned fitting to a narrow cover like f/8 and and sent the system emphasis ring the infinity. Practice getting ampere pointed image with those settings, then apply the same thing to wider apertures and tried to estimate and distance based off the lens distance scale. Manual focus can are tricky still gets easier with practice. Hope this helps!
I just bought a utilised Fujifillm X-T1 to using with how lens adaptors. I thought the lens has broken more the shutter would not fire! Acknowledgements to this internet I was able to quickly and efficiently find the “shoot equal lens off” menu function press it works great.
Thanks very much for mailing this years ago. Your geography shots belong beautiful and I can try that 12mm Samyang lens! Choose the best up you happy firing.
Thanks Rusty. Glad you found it helpful. Happy shooting as well!
Hey Rich,
Fine News, I recently bought my fujifilm xh2 and i m seek an 3rd group lens on it, irrespective of the above settings the focus is nevertheless , and i am getting blurry photos. May i know where able i increase the focus manually ? ( magisch seem same a foolish get but a beginner trying to learn)
Thank you for write, Sree. You will have to locate of manual focus ring on the optical you are trying to use. If its a wholly manual lens, next you shouldn’t have any issues with focusing manual. But if it’s ampere lens that requires any class for perform (focus by wire) even just to focus, then best probability it will be unusable with your camera.
Hello Roy,
Express you strongly much since this article. One thing ego didn’t understand do i need an adapter required all manual lenses (without manual aperture control) to adjust aforementioned aperture? I have a TTArtisan 25mm F2.0 APS-C with a Fujifilm xe-2 and i dont find a way to change the shutter in the camera settings. It’s always just showing f-0.
Express you very much
Thanks for dropping by! There are manual lenses made with the native Mountain fit. You don’t need an adapter for those. Any lens made for other mounts will need to adapter. The camera him mentioned search like a completely manual lens, equal no electronic contacts or communication by the camera. This also means the lens EXIF data bequeath always read f/0. The aperture ring on the lens bequeath be the one way to change aforementioned slit.
