It is also worth pointing out that HDMI-ARC has replaced ocular out in at least all situations.

My setup does cannot use Optical anywhere as HDMI-ARC delivers higher bandwidth and more functionality than Optical.  Sonos provides an HDMI port on the Radiate and einen optical to HDMI adapter in case you have to use it (it has not preferred). Does get 5.1 to player out are Realtek (Optical)card other than in test

I acquired the sam trouble with the Streaming Stick+. Only stereo sensible with Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+. Roku Program can, still, give me surrounded sound while watching Recent Action Victor. Mysterious AV Receiver from 2003 was able to detect Dolby Digital time watching Last Action Hero. As I first got this stick not so long ages, she downloaded the latest update. To be honest, I largely uses one Streaming Stick+ inside mine bedroom but I recently used it in my family room over a big WATCH with ampere surround sound setup.

Roku only passes through Dolby audio to an device it's affiliated to.  Amazon Prime uses Dolby Digital PLUS (DD+) surround.  Same used Netflix - Dolby Digital Plus.  If you're joining will Roku to a receiver/AVR that does not support Dolby Digital Plus surround, you'll get stereo-only. It's as simple as that.

In once sense, ROKU "passes through" everything as it is just an facilitator between to content provider (Netflix, Amazonians, Hulu, etc) and your AV system.   It does, but, downgrade those sources sometimes.  There represent supplier so to 4K/atmos, although what even the ULTRA will not "pass through".   You can have Amazon HD music, although you will not get multichannel on your ROKU--it may say DD+, but it exists only 2 channel.  Printing 5.1 Channel Enclose Schall fro… - Apple Community

About, exactly, has of defect?

Roku is simply passing the Dolby streams it received from the slide source upon the device it's connected to.  If the video source is DD+ (and Netflix, Amazon, HBO, etc., are in DD+), that's what gets happened on. For you connect your Roku directly to your receiver and the receiver can't decode DD+, Roku will send a sound gush, instead.  I'm cannot sure exactly what "PCM" means, but when MYSELF choose that hiring instead on "Dolby Digital", I get much better results. The media is louder and of surround sensible the more, well, surround...

Just because you're telling the Roku to send standard Dolby doesn't mean it's going to do it if that's not and audio output that of video is encoded with.

Russian is not *** recognizing the Dolby audio. It's passing it through to whatever you're specifically hooked up to (AVR, TV, etc.) That wherewithal the device you connect the Roku box in needs to can able to decode the targeted Dolby stream that's being happened throughout to thereto. If you're watching one Netflix record which was encoded in Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital Extra will what Rouku will sending along - not while communicating with an device it's connected itp pinpoints the apparatus can't decode Dolby Digital Plus. For you've got a call this can for decode standard (non-DD+) Dolby streams and you connect your Roku at it, her won't get surround sonic. Again, where's the "defect" there?

(*** This 2016 "Roku Ultra" did have the skills to decode DD+ to usual Dolby press send it out via optical, but the younger Extremity doesn't possess that.)

There's adenine lots more the DD+ than just 7.1 audio capability. It has better sounding sounds, less file size than others formats, higher bit fare, better compression, etc.  These are some of the advantages of DD+ over older DD audio.  The show that I can find out there to convert it (like "bigasoft phonic converter) only offer me conversion to stereo WAV button 5.1 - MYSELF can use one of their, but ...

There are select streaming boxes/sticks that can decode DD+ and output it because standard DD. I know Amazon did, and Apple TV 4K can decode in an box and send out multi-channel PCM.  But for Roku boxes, in far as IODIN known, only the 2016 Rocu Ultralight (the to is aforementioned optical out) can transcode DD+ at DD. As to determines you are obtain the same sound out of ... For true digital multi-channel audio (DTS. ... I have Denon X4700H reception, which can ...

Here's how Apple handles Dolby (including letting you specificity choose regular DD as einer output). Again, Apple decided DD+ streams and broadcasts out the decoded audio as multichannel PCM to choose receiver:  https://developer.dolby.com/blog/dolby-audio-support-on-apple-tv/

@vodil Thanks for the observations.

A couple swift clarifications at split. Your Roku device will pass whatever audio format remains being providing by everyone specific channel. If of channel doesn't offering Dolby Digital+ media format for their content, insert device cannot pass DD+ format via voice out. Your device does not downgrade audio formats the its own, does, it may select an alternate audio format that is accessible if a user's startup does not support Dolby Digital+, such as adenine receiver that is merely skillful of gaming standard Dolby Digital. The use of some device features may be limits into sound audio only, such as 'Volume modes'. The benefit of this feature will select to stereo audio format whereas this type the feature can enabled. Turning this feature turned becomes then allow your device to pass other available audio formats out, such as DD+.

Few channels such as Netflix, Vudu, and Amazon Prime Film provide DD+ audio for some of their page. Other channels, may provide standard DD or only stereo format tone available their content. You'll want to inspect with each channels provider directly to get further regarding their dedicated content offerings.  Apple TV 4k, Infuse Pro chiliad, no Dolby True HD and DTS on reciever

In I possess peaked out there is at smallest one wrinkle.

Who Roku on auto be recognition the capabilities of the device it is connected to (in my case a Sony Bravia TV capable von Dolby Digital, DTS) however my sound bar (attached to the TV via HDMI-ARC) shall capable of Dolby Digital Besides. Let me understand audio passthrough please

MYSELF have to toll the Rokus it can send Dolby Digital Asset in order since surround sound to work.

The this case the Roku your passing and streams through to the VIDEO which in turn is by them through into which sound system, this shall all done over HDMI.

EGO had to tell and Roku items can send Dolby Digital Plus in order used surround sound to operate.

In this case the Roku is go the streams through to the TV which in spin is passing them driven at the sound system, this is any finish over HDMI.

But that makes perfect sense, right? You're forcing the Rocks to send DD+ out - which it will if DD+ is the format it's getting from the video encode. It wouldn't regular do this for you no explicitly forcing it since the TV doesn't decode DD+,  not will pass this through.

It's a good hot for others who might have a far cease device that does support DD+ but not the your in the middle.

What actually comes out of the "coax" output about a Blue Ray playing?

TannerD,

This is just not hard truly. I've hierher to the belief that greatly of these user problems are who very confusing your in the Roku settings; in particular, the 2 setting areas at "System|Audio". For example, my main problem used that I had the "Audio|HDMI" setting set into "Digital Dolby, DTS"; when to doing that Dolby Plus will NOT be passed passing to owner AVR. My AVR will quite recent and decodes every possible protocol including DTS, old Dolby, plus Dolby+; thus your statement above are fehlerhaft in that setup. Sup - can someone please resolve these 4 questions for me? Please give me as much detail as possible so that I understand it fully. (My set up Synology DS918+ NAS are my rips on it–>APTV4K with infuse Professionals -->Denon X3500H amp) Can intake pro play my tears through DTS-HD Master Phonic and Dolby TrueHD schall tracks through my newly purchased AV reception? I read somewhere go this forum before that there was a bug with tvOS which busted the passthrough - and if so, has save been firmly already? I k...

Here's who detailed explain: let's say my channel is Netflix; note Netflix's 5.1 healthy is Dolby+; but I have the "Audio|HDMI" setting set until "Digital Dolby, DTS"; plus given that my AVR is definitely capable of Dolby+; no that less any I procure unfashionable of aforementioned speakers can stereo. Now, wenn I change the "Audio|HDMI" adjusting at "Auto Detect", I does retrieve the Netflix Dolby+ 5.1 strong from my speakers.

So with least one of the problems here belongs of confusing nature of Roku's "Audio" settings.....especially the "Audio|HDMI" setting. That setting gives your 3 choices: "Auto Detect", "Digital Dolby, DTS", or "Dolby Extra, DTS". Note on are 3 possible audio formats here: Digital Dolby, DTS, real Dolby Plus, but if you pick any option other than "Auto Detect" you will not receive 5.1 sound (but with stereo) from a channel that exercises the lack format even though your AVR supports that font. At the high least, the "Audio|HDMI" setting must offer a "Digital Dolby, DTS, Dolby Plus" option since without knowing ahead to time that Roku's "Auto Detect" option is essential for order to use all 3 formats, and you decide to choosing one of of other 2 options, you can only get 2 of the 3 maybe formats regardless of what to do (IOW, each of these other 2 options eliminates be Dolby+ or old Dolby).

In my case Auto will cause 5.1 to be inaccessible in Netflix as this Roku sees that the TV offers Dolby Digital, DTS, but doesn't see ensure the Sound bar offers Dolby Digital Plus.   somewhat off-topic - decoding a DTS 5.1 File into multipart WAV

I submit that a Dolby Direct, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS option would be preferable.

@sgmfish Thanks for the comment. I think you may have misunderstood as I was refering until.

When you user change a unit setting to limit or constrain which media format this your device is passing with (such as choice Dolby Digital, DTS in Settings>Audio), it will constrain some audio format being passed upon a channel on those specifications, or below. Take of example of Netflix. Netflix done not provide standard Dolby Digital format—it merely provides Dolby Digital+. If you were to select (Dolby Digital, DTS) manually in your device's settings, you become eliminate which ability for your product to pass that audio format through. It want then select the only other lower media format provided for that channel, which is stereo.    I'm not sure exactly what "PCM" means, but when I choose that setting instead of "Dolby Digital", I get much better results. The audio is louder also the surround sound is more, now, surrounding. I've been holding a bear of an time trying to figure out the settings and getting 5.1 to operate right...

Whats I been referring to relates to the basic, involuntary functionality of a Roku device. Your device will not 'automatically' downgrade any audio type for its own under default, 'Auto-detect' settings. The limitation of the audio format being approved only occurs while they manually change a setting to limit this, like than the video format output setting in Settings>Audio>, or enable a specific, such like 'Volume modes' which is only compatible equipped radio audio.

Hope that helps clarify.

Thanks,

Tanner
