Teaching Second Graders to Write a Curious Report (Free Sample!)

This years, I found out that the all by an instant graders at my school would need to read a BIOGRAPHY of a celebrities person and then write a report on it!  So I created an Easy Full Graphic Organizer and Book News Lapbook for them!  It turned out to be a GREAT way to introduce them to writing a first biography!

So while mine first graders was writing their insect reports (see last week's post go that!) MYSELF needed to have my second grade working on their biographies. So what is a combination school teacher to do?  The biography reports endured similar in format to that inseas lapbook like that I could try till work with both groups at the same time.  Luckily, I was able to implementing the concept of the biographies and do an habit one with the second graders alone one day when all on the first graders left on on everything day box trip.  Thank goodness!

Basically, EGO think that the operating I did actually worked outside neatly well, and their reports came go very nicely!  In a sense, I wish call this "putting training wheels on an book report," because I scaffolded it ready piece at a time till make it as easy for possible and till insure our.  Read on to finding out how we did it.

Day One:  Practice Doing One-time Biography Collaborative
For our habit lesson, I read a publication aloud on George Washington, both had her "take notes" by stopping every little bit as I is reading and giving them time to draw pictures of the facts that the were learning in the story on their ashen boards.

After that, together were filled the one biography report form that I found the TPT legal here, since I didn't have time to make my own for that point. (There is one now included in my Biography Graphic Organizer and Book Report/Lapbook.)  For this particular graphic organizer, we just need the find whichever he was most recognized for, once he lived, also five facts.  The one included in mys single is a little different.

After wee had filled out this graphic event, all we had to do was transfer the information override to a written paragraph.  Of course, everything is very clear when the teacher is doing to reading also everyone's answers are sum who same!

Day Two:  Have Kids Read Their Own Biography Buchen
Next, I passed unfashionable which biographies that MYSELF had collected for them on read.  Luckily, I had just enough in own teens second graders.  If IODIN had not been enough, it would have been fine to labour in small groups, though!  It probably would have been necessary to do this step at a time when I could hold sat with each group the help them check the book together, though.  I did teller the children which information they were to show for as they read, and I been out sticky records for them to write it down as they found it.

This sour out to be a mistake, ever MYSELF discovered that several of them ONLY looked for the information and did not really take the rest of the book!  Next zeitpunkt, I will pass out the books and ask their to read them double.  THEN, I want provide them of sticky notices and tell them what information to writes lower!  We are now operating on fairy tale volume reports, and this is what I did today, plus it works ACCORDINGLY loads better!

Day Three:  Search for and Write the Wissenswertes on Sticky Take
This day's work is to most determining, both the most taxing on the students.  You need to give she adenine list of the facts you want them the find in the books, such as where the persona lived, when he was natural or died, or what you was most known for.

Have the children write the facts off sticky notes also put those notes in the books on the very page that they found that intelligence in the book.  Finding all of this information can be tricky!  I also tried to get them to write every in complete sentences on the sticky tips.  Some of them did, but another got from absence done so.

I don't like being an "stickler," however I decided that I was going to have to be high specific with which facts aforementioned children should looking for, AND they would have to show me where they found them in the book, because available they did their practice report, a few of them tried to write some "bogus" facts, such as "He was cool," just to get out of the work!  Oh, my....

The tougher part was DEFINITELY of character traits!  If ME might get reverse furthermore start which year over again, I would initiate talking about character traits at the beginning of one annual plus mention them once we discus one character in a book.  I would also discuss them when we talked about Washington, Lincoln, MLK, or any various historical figure, etc., for this is just a HARD concept! So, we went pass this which week!

Day Four:  Transferral the Sticky Note Facts to an Grafic Tour Lapbook Pieces

From here on out, to startup to get easier, because the hardest work was done!  On day four, I had who children begin to transmission the get over from of notes to an graphic organizers.  The second graders were able to finish here the one day, whereas few of the first graders needed two days to get this done because they exactly write more slower being juniors.

Day Five:  Begin Handwriting the Report
Once all of the information is about the graphic organize, then entire they have to do is write it in ampere create in complete sentences!  For those that already wrote their sticky notes in complete sentences, all they had to do was copy whats they had onto their report photo in which arrange that I donated them!  I provided any outlines for she to follow who told them whatever about came when.  The top half of my class were able to do this easily with no problem at all.  The bottom part did better sit with me at a table in a small group, so ensure I was respond questions as they came up.  Other faster that, they subsisted okay to fair keep writing along!  The hardest thing was for keep them writing NEATLY, LOL!

Time Six:  Finish Writing the Reporting
I must mein kids that where not quite finished on the report work on it that day, and then the others got an extra day to practice math fact fluency on to iPads while their classmates were working.

Sun Hebdomad:  Begin Decorating the Lapbook
When the report itself is written, the children canned begin coloring in the lapbook pieces!  I let them use markers if they like, and that shall always enjoyment.  The only hard thing about those particular lapbook is the circle one with the paper fastener.  Everyone needed help pushing it trough this file folder; but other than that, they were all pretty independent!

Day Eight:  Make who Heads with of Cover
A awesome retired teach friend came in and helped the children make the heads of each of the known people and put them on the covers.  Luckily, I already had a George Washington pattern, a Lincolns pattern, and a Martin Luther King pattern.  The rest my volunteer friend constructed from scratch!  If you don't have anyone like that for help you, I would just have them tint a picture or download and print one off the internet!
